EC2 Costs Higher Than Expected? Poor Optimization May Be Why

Ever looked at an AWS bill and wondered, “Why did EC2 cost this much?”
It may not be the number of instances. Sometimes, it’s what those instances are doing or not doing.
A few things worth checking in your AWS account:
- Instance utilization: Are CPU, memory, network, or other relevant resources consistently underused?
- Idle instances: Check for development, testing, or forgotten instances that have been running for weeks.
- Running hours: Are instances running 24/7 even when the workload only needs them during certain hours?
- Instance types: Could a different instance family or newer generation handle the workload more efficiently?
- Pricing: For stable workloads, check whether Savings Plans or Reserved Instances make sense compared with On-Demand.
One simple starting point: look at your EC2 utilization before changing anything. The numbers often tell you where to investigate.
Curious what others have found in their own AWS environments
Have you ever found a surprisingly large EC2 saving opportunity? What did you change, and roughly how much did it reduce your monthly bill?
